IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SPECIAL PLATES
Upon purchase of a Special Number, the Applicant will enter into an agreement with the
Registrar of Motor Vehicles, to display the number attached to a class specific number plate on the motor vehicle described in this application, or on a
nominated motor vehicle.
CONDITIONS THAT APPLY TO ALL PLATE AGREEMENTS
- Number plate agreements may be purchased as a gift for another person, provided the application is completed in the recipient's name.
- Current fee details for new issues, replacements and transfer of special number plates are available from your local Customer Service Centre.
- Refunds and changes to number plate orders are not permitted.
- Only number plates issued by Registrar of Motor Vehicles or supplied by the approved manufacturer may be displayed.
- Under no circumstances may the number plates be displayed upon any other vehicle (unless a new agreement is made).
- Number plate agreements may be transferred to another vehicle registered in the same name, after lodging an application and on payment of a
re-allocation fee. The application will only be accepted if the registration of the previous vehicle has expired, been cancelled or a general registration
number has been allocated.
- The number will not be placed on reservation without payment of the appropriate fee.
- Reserved plates will not be released to the agreement holder until the details of the vehicle to which the plate will be allocated are provided.
- Replacement number plates are only available on application and payment of a fee payable through any Customer Service Centre.
- A number plate or a vehicle with number plates which has been recorded as being lost or stolen will not be transferred or reissued to a new owner
unless the new owner has been made aware that the number plates may be subject to Police enquiry.
NUMERIC REGISTRATION NUMBERS
- Numeric numbers which were issued to a vehicle on or prior to 31st December 1966 may be retained on that vehicle if the registration of that vehicle is
continuously renewed in the same name. If the registration expires or there is a change of ownership, the Registrar of Motor Vehicles will under Section
47a(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act resume the number unless an agreement is entered into.
NUMERIC RESTRICTED RIGHTS AGREEMENT
- Restricted rights enable the registered owner of a motor vehicle to retain the numeric number where it is the immediate last number allocated to the
vehicle whether the vehicle is registered or not. The rights will lapse where there is a change of ownership or the plates are removed from the vehicle.
- The Registrar of Motor Vehicles has the right to refuse an application.
CLASS SPECIFIC RIGHTS
Class Specific Rights issued for a numeric number, Grand Prix, Jubilee or Centenary of Federation number allow for the:
- number to be displayed on a motor vehicle;
- transfer of the number to another vehicle owned by the holder upon payment of the re-allocation fee;
- assignment of the numeric number to another owner upon payment of the transfer fee as listed in item 5 of the number plate agreement and may be
adjusted for CPI.
An application in writing to the Registrar of Motor Vehicles requesting the numeric number is required.
SPECIAL NUMBER AGREEMENT
- Grand Prix, Jubilee and Centenary of Federation numbers are no longer available as a first issue. These plates may however be relinquished to another
owner (Subject to approval by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.) upon payment of appropriate fees. Grand Prix, Jubilee Plates and Centenary of Federation may
only be allocated to a vehicle. Grand Prix and Jubilee Plates without Class Specific Rights will be resumed by the Registrar if not allocated to a vehicle
within 5 years.
RE-ALLOCATION RIGHTS
- The agreement to display or reserve a Personalised Plate will be void if the number is not allocated to a vehicle within 5 years from the date of
payment.
- If a Personalised, Alpha-numeric or Premium plate is not allocated to a vehicle within five years, or is allocated to a vehicle where the registration
has lapsed for a period of five years, a further fee is payable if the number is to be retained. If the further fee is not paid, the number becomes
available for re-issue to another person. (Premium Plates are not available for re-issue).
- A choice of combinations is available for personalised plates. Please ask a Customer Service Officer, or phone 13 10 84, for details on allowable
combinations.
- These rights allow an Alpha-numeric or Premium number to be re-assigned to other vehicles registered in the same name as the person who holds such an
agreement.
- An Alpha-numeric number may only be allocated to a vehicle. Premium Plates can only be allocated to vehicles.
- Alpha-numeric and Premium Plates are issued sequentially. No choice is allowed in regards to the combination of the number issued by a Customer Service
Centre.
- The rights to a non-slogan alpha-numeric or Premium Plate number are lost if a currently registered vehicle is transferred while that number is still
allocated to the vehicle
CUSTOM AND EURO PLATES
- This agreement once signed by or on behalf of the Registrar and the applicant ("the owner") constitutes an agreement between the Registrar and the
owner for the allotment of a number plate to a vehicle owned by the owner ("the vehicle") and authority to display the number plates on the vehicle, or
reservation of a number plate for future allotment to a vehicle owned by the owner, for the period of time set out in the schedule ("the term") to which
agreement the reverse page is the schedule.
- The Registrar may at any time and at his sole discretion by notice in writing to the owner terminate this agreement and revoke the authority to display
the number plates, and shall at the option of the owner:
- allot to the vehicle a new number selected by the owner and approved by the Registrar, or
- refund to the owner an amount bearing the same proportion to the agreement fee in the schedule as the unexpired portion of the term bears to
the term and shall allot a new number to the vehicle (if applicable) and issue new ordinary plates for the vehicle
- If the agreement is for reservation of the number, subject to Clause 2 hereof:-
- the Registrar shall not, during the term, enter into an agreement with any other person to allot the number to a vehicle:
- at any time during the term the Registrar shall on the application of the owner allot the number to a vehicle of which the owner is the South
Australian registered owner and remaining conditions of this agreement shall then apply:
- the owner may by written notice to the Registrar authorise transfer of his rights under this agreement to any other person who shall be subject
in the exercise of those rights to the conditions set out herein.
- If the agreement is for allotment of a number to a vehicle and authority to display the number plates on a vehicle, subject to Clause 2 hereof:-
- the Registrar shall allot the number plate to the vehicle;
- number plates in accordance with the schedule shall be issued to the owner;
- the owner is hereby authorised for the term to display the number plates on the vehicle;
- upon expiry of the term, in the absence of an agreement otherwise, the authority to display the number plates shall expire, the Registrar may
allot another number to the vehicle and the Registrar at his discretion enter into an agreement with any other person with respect to the allotment
or reservation of the number plate;
- subject to condition 4(7) the owner may by notice in writing and payment of a transfer fee to the Registrar transfer the number plate to
another vehicle owned by the owner and the authority shall be varied accordingly;
- subject to condition 4(7) the owner may by notice in writing
- if the vehicle is sold authorise transfer of his rights and the authority under this agreement to the vehicle's new owner ("the
transferee"), or
- relinquish or suspend the right to have the number plate allotted to any vehicle and associated authority and for the balance of the
term
- reserve the number plate, or
- authorise the Registrar to enter into an agreement with another person ("the transferee") with respect to the number plate;
- notwithstanding any rights of the owner or a transferee under this agreement, any vehicle in respect of which a number is to be allotted or an
authority granted must be a vehicle currently registered in South Australia, and the Registrar may require a transferee to pay a transfer fee and
may if the number plate is to be reallocated pursuant to condition 4(5) or 4(6) when less than twelve months of the term is unexpired require an
agreement for a further term to be entered into for such fee as is then applicable less the fee paid for the unexpired portion of the term;
- this agreement shall terminate forthwith if the owner transfers the vehicle without notifying the Registrar pursuant to condition 4(5) or 4(6);
- if this agreement terminates or ceases to apply to a vehicle the Registrar may unless the registration of that vehicle is cancelled reallocate
any number plate to that vehicle;
- transfer fees and fees for reservation and allotment of number plates shall be set or varied from time to time by the Registrar at his sole
discretion.
NOTE: Rights given to the owner herein are personal to the owner and may only be transferred as provided herein. If the owner wishes to retain the number
plate and authority to display the number plates after expiry of the term a new agreement must be entered into prior to the expiry of the term.
A number plate or a vehicle with number plates which has been recorded as being lost or stolen will not be transferred or reissued to a new owner unless the
new owner has been made aware that the number plates may be subject to Police enquiry.
It is an offence to drive a vehicle with a number plate supplied pursuant to this agreement if this agreement has expired.
